The obvious answer is that the sled was burned to hammer in the whole ROSEBUD thing...which makes this a little ham-fisted, tbh, like they started with the shot and worked backwards from it

Money and power corrupt. I think he started out just being coltish then once he got in place and realized how much he could do, sort of sold his soul. I don't know if this is me being spoiled by some kind of modern film-making but if they had shown Kane being sad or lonely while being raised by the bank, it would have given things more impact. It's been hard for me to really connect the sled and his lost happiness to the hollow life and big house full of crap. I don't like having to infer something that much because it feels like pop psychology.
Even one scene of him looking out a snowy window would have worked.
